How to clean the heating system of a private house

The heating system of a private house is a complicated construction, which consists of a boiler, a great amount of pipes, and the heaters (radiators). Smooth operation of the heating system can be maintained only if every component of the system is in a good operational condition. Regular cleaning of the heating system helps maintain the system in an optimum operational condition and ensure the maximum operational characteristics of the system itself. Insufficient frequency of the pipe cleaning, inattention to the issue may cause failure of individual components of the system, then, respectively, the entire system’s failure.

Why do we need to clean the heating system?

The system not simply circulates the heat carrier; it is also exposed to high temperatures, so the inner surfaces of the system are subjected to chemical impact. As a result, scale and rust build up on the surfaces, as well as associated organic sediment or sludge deposits appear in the system. All those substances build up on the walls of the radiators, pipelines, boiler, significantly lowering the heat-transfer rates and the productivity of the entire system.

It’s interesting, that according to the engineers, a nine millimeter thick layer of sediments can require a 50 percent increase in fuel consumption to get the same efficiency as that of the clean system. This is definitely quite an increase of the heating costs. Timely flushing and cleaning of the system can help cope with this problem, ensuring long-term keeping the system in a good operational condition.

When do we need to clean the heating system?

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. In our case the preventive cleaning of the pipelines, risers and radiators will help significantly increase the service life of your heating system. How do we know that the system demands your activity in this direction? If you notice one or more signs listed below, get ready to carrying out the cleaning.

  • Heating up the system takes much more time than it had before;
  • Weird, unusual sounds come from the boiler;
  • The radiators are heated unevenly, hot top and cold bottom;
  • Pipes, connected to the radiator are hotter than the radiator itself;
  • Noticeably increased fuel consumption along with the same efficiency of the system.

You can do the cleaning the following ways:

  • Pulse jetting a water mixture (requires special equipment that removes carbon, rust, sand, chemicals, etc.);
  • Using biological products (bioremediators, usually water-based, circulate through the system, loosening the deposits built up on the walls);
  • Chemically, using organic or inorganic acids.

One of the advantages of the latter option is that it can remove deposits from the most remote spots of the heating system and its full coverage of the surfaces. However, before you choose a chemical for cleaning you should take into account the following factors: types of materials your heating system components are built of; the nature and the degree of the system components’ contamination; technological features.
